to top it off on "saturday night live," snl skewered president obama. that was last week. now the new polls. >> less than one month to go, and mitt romney is making up serious ground against the president. bpew research has the governor with an advantage over the president among likely voters. >> romney won. he looked presidential. he had confidence. >> there's no comparison, competent, confident leadership versus really rank, amateur, clicheed liberalism. >> every time they run a truly vicious ad, then you see romney in a debate, he's not the person they ran the ad about. >> nearly 70 million americans saw the real mitt romney, not what they see in 30-second attack ads. >> the debate was a reset of this campaign. >> 80 million people finally got an unfiltered look at mitt romney and liked what they saw. >> this race fundamentally changed wednesday night in ohio. i think it did across the country. >> you saw inspiration, heart, preparedness from mitt romney. and you saw a president that came in unprepared, uninspiring. >> i don't think the president was really mentally pre

we didn't hear about president obama saying you didn't build it or something like that. this was a more elevated discussion. we don't see a lot of things on ads tonight. >> right. i think that is good for the american people because it's a substantive discussion about issues and i thought that again, that governor romney came across with great command and energy. and that i'm certain next time he'll be better prepared. and there is a discussion about what's happening in latest attack ad. it's about the issues and i thought that it was for that reason a good debate. that was very impressed by and pleased with the governor's performance tonight. i think it gave him an opportunity he hasn't had before with people who are undecided. they had to have walked away tonight impressed by what they heard and saw. >> greta: i thought one of the questions governor romney handled well was the bipartisan question. we had a discussion about the fact there is no budget. we can't get a budget here because senator harry reid doesn't want that to happen. that is where there is a lot of tie

you know with joe biden you are going to get a handsful of these -- maybe every week. but the soft spot for president obama is that the record for the last four years is not one he can be particularly proud of. he is running on the clinton economy, more than he is on his own -- >> greta: in other words, they were buried -- >> well, whatever -- whatever -- whatever word you want to use, there are not a lot of things to point to in the economic numbers that make you feel good about t. he clarified and said it's because of the romney and ryan policies that they were buried over the larger period than four yierz, but it's a bad comment. it's the four years that you are going to have president obama trying to defend -- tomorrow night. >> the problem is, joe biden talked about the one thing he was not supposed to talk about on the campaign. this is what the obama administration has been militant about -- they want to talk about the bad things of the bush administration and the things they may do in the future that will make them better. they don't want to talk about the last

joining it's retrievable by obama. i don't think you get a second chance to make a first impression. and i think that romney really scored. i thought when he explained to people that tax cut on the rich would not be on the rich, it was a tax increase on the rich, it was a tax increase on small business employers and they employ 50% of the american workforce. by raising their taxes, you are undermining their ability to create be jos. that was brilliant. i thought that really, he took away, all kinds of arguments from obama. while obama can wait until the performance wears off and people forget how stumbling and hesitant and detached he was, what will remain is the ground that he ceded to romney. >> greta: i thought it was significant that 67 million people watched this, the largest number since i think 1992. chfts a measurement to -- which was a measurement to me of the enthusiasm for the election. i don't know which way it will fall. but it showed interest by the country. >> i think the same reason that they watched it

they haven't wanted to be as confrontational with president obama. you have this line that mitt romney has been saying now throughout the entire, you know, election, president obama's a really nice guy, he's in over his head. i don't think that's the right attitude to take into the debate. i think he'll have to be aggressive. he'll have to be confrontational. doesn't mean he has to be nasty. there's a difference, but he has to be very aggressive, look like he's being aggressive to the viewers. >> greta: when he says he's over his head, that's a little condescending, that kind of thing. i think he'd be better saying he's wrong. >> well, either way. he has to seize this moment entirely. think back to those debates. how often did each of those candidates say, i want to be the guy who stands on the stage debating the president? if he can deliver a very strong attack against him, i don't see why that wouldn't bring republicans, anyone upset with the president with romney. he has to take full of that opportunity. there are republicans who dream of the oppo
